Earlier this year, Peloton, an exercise equipment manufacturer, acquired Atlas Wearables, a wearable tech brand specializing in smartwatches. We explore what the new Peloton acquisition could mean for Peloton and see if it hints at a Peloton smartwatch.
Who is Peloton?
Peloton Interactive is an exercise equipment manufacturer specializing in treadmills and bikes. The company’s primary products are stationary bikes. The bikes feature a touchscreen through which users can stream classes for as low as $12.99 per month. The Classes include meditation, running, yoga, strength training, aerobic exercise, cycling, tread, and biking Bootcamp, stretching, and walking. Users can also stream the classes through Peloton’s app or website. The company’s instructors include Ally Love, Jess King, Robin Arzon, and Alex Toussaint. The video lessons are recorded at the instructor’s home or Peloton’s studios and made available for subscribers for 24/7 streaming.
Just like Apple, Peloton has got its own range of hardware, and now software, streaming content, and even fitness clothing. However, they’re lacking in measuring people’s physical data to complete the circle of input and output of personal fitness data. With the new Peloton acquisition, it seems like the company is possibly working on a bigger plan behind the scenes, creating a full-circle solution, from personal training to fitness machines to fitness wear, and now wearable tech for health measuring. This also means Peloton users can use Peloton products in the most connected ways and enjoy the benefits of understanding and optimizing their personal data.
IoT fitness devices are more than just an accessory. If you are a health-conscious person, an AI-powered fitness tracker or smart band can help maintain your health like never before through heart rate and sleep monitoring and exercise modes. Peloton is one such company that acknowledged the growing demand for fitness tracking. They want to offer technology that would improve health and fitness. Recently, Peloton acquired Atlas Wearables, a fitness wearable technology company. Peloton’s new acquisition is not the only acquisition by Peloton so far, they have also acquired Aiqudo, Otari.
It seems that Peloton intends to scale up to fitness and wearable tech products including computer-vision technology and AI projects. And it’s making the right moves to scale up to that. The recent acquisition was completed in late 2020 and so far, there is no information about the actual price paid to Atlas Wearables. After this acquisition, we don’t know what’s going to happen to the Atlas Multi-Trainer 3 watch, which was still in its testing phase. But we may see it surface back soon.
Who’s Atlas Wearables?
Atlas Wearables became well known for raising $500,000 for its Atlas Wristband on IndieGoGo, which came out in 2015. Started in 2014, the company has been around for a while offering a reliable workout partner to people who want to get fit in or out of the gym.
Crafted with blood, sweat, and data, Atlas Wearables has created wearable techs that offer a reliable movement recognition system, turn-by-turn navigation, performance assessment by measuring physiological state and muscle fatigue, and workout logs so fitness enthusiasts can spend less time logging repetitions.
The wearable tech devices offered by the company come with performance readiness insights that help fitness enthusiasts analyze multiple biometrics including HRV(Heart rate variability) and RHR (resting heart rate) to recover faster. These biometrics can be accessed through the Atlas Wearable app. Since 2015, Atlas Wearables has helped fitness enthusiasts amplify their self-discipline, accelerate progress, and increase workout capacity for better health and longevity.
Peloton’s New Acquisition could mean Peloton is planning a smartwatch
We already know that Atlas Wearables had its Atlas Multi-Trainer 3 watch in the pipeline. With this acquisition, there is a strong possibility that Peloton will launch the watch under its brand name, adding to its wide array of fitness products. Since Peloton is all about making exercise easy for its users, it’s probable that Peloton is after the high-tech measuring and analyzing features of Atlas Wearables. The company’s wristbands offer accelerometer-like motion sensors, gyroscope sensors, and motion trackers to capture motion in 3D.
The wearable tech wristband matches those motions with an extensive library of different exercises that include dumbbell, body weight, and barbell exercises. Additionally, the wristband offers a heart rate monitor. In addition to its highly innovative features, the wristband comes in eye-catching designs. Its soft wristband reminds us of Fitbit Blaze.
Despite its heavy-looking sensor module, the device is easy on the wrist. Let’s see if the Peloton changes this cumbersome look of the sensor module. Now considering all of this, it shouldn’t be surprising that everyone is speculating about a Peloton smartwatch.
Peloton already has its hands in smart wearable tech for its smart treadmills and bikes. The company also has an Apple app that allows users to track indoor running and monitor heart rate. Do you think there could be a Peloton smartwatch?
