In a recent interview on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” to promote his new memoir Source Code: My Beginnings. Bill Gates shared candid stories about his early life, including his experimentation with LSD, discussions with Steve Jobs, and his views on artificial intelligence (AI) and the future.
Experimenting with LSD, Just like any curious kid
Gates recounted his teenage years, during which he experimented with LSD. He humorously described an incident where, after taking the drug, he had to visit the dentist. He remarked, “I took the wrong kind of LSD… and then I had to go to the dentist.” This experience left a lasting impression on him, leading him to discontinue the use of psychedelic substances.
Conversations with Steve Jobs
In his memoir Source Code, Bill Gates offers a candid account of his initial encounter with Steve Jobs, providing insights into their early interactions. Gates recounts attending the 1977 West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco, where he first noticed Jobs. He describes Jobs as having “long black hair, a tightly cropped beard, and a three-piece suit,” exuding a distinctive aura that set him apart from others at the event. Gates reflects, “Even from a distance I could tell he had a certain aura about him. I said to myself, ‘Who is that guy?’
Gates also shared anecdotes about his continuous interactions with Steve Jobs with Fallon. He mentioned that, despite their professional rivalry, they had moments of camaraderie. He recalled, “We had a lot of fun together, even though we were competitors.” These interactions highlighted the complex relationship between the two tech pioneers.
Views on Artificial Intelligence and Optimism for the Future
Regarding AI, Gates expressed both optimism and caution. He acknowledged the rapid advancements in AI technologies and their potential to revolutionize various industries. He stated, “AI is going to be as impactful as the internet.” However, he also emphasized the need for responsible development and ethical considerations in AI deployment. He added, “We need to make sure AI is used for good and doesn’t harm people.” Despite the challenges, Gates remains optimistic about the future, believing that technological advancements can lead to significant improvements in global health, education, and sustainability.
